In India, the Fortuner is certainly headed for a rollercoaster ride. This is not to mistaken for the car having low popularity. In fact, ever since it was introduced in the Indian auto market, bookings have been pouring in. So much so, that Toyota had to put a break on further bookings, so the company could first deliver to their existing customer list. The backlog stood at 6,000 in the country.
Obviously this was going to hurt the company, so only recently they restarted bookings with a pledge to clear the backlog. However, that happy run has ended as Toyota has stalled bookings within a month of having starting them again.
This Kirloskar Group JV kept bookings open for this SUV for the month of July this year after having suspended bookings in Jan. It appears the SUV has found fans in the additional 3,004 bookings made through July. As such, the company is yet again dealing with a backlog o over 6,000 vehicles.
Toyota hopes to clear their Fortuner backlog by the end of the year, and consequently resume bookings by January next year. Toyota had earlier expressed a desire to clear all backlogs by end o year. Production has been increased to over a 1000 vehicles each month. Initially this figure hovered at around 500 vehicles.
